A typical day at
Nature's Classroom
A typical day begins with a hearty breakfast at 8 AM followed by a chance to clean up and get ready for the day. Students will spend the rest of the morning with their Field Groups, exploring the site and experiencing new challenges and discoveries. After lunch, students have a little free time for rest and recreation and then get to choose two Special Interest classes. There is a little more free time after dinner and then a variety of evening activities.
Over the past 21 years, Channel 3 Kids camp has partnered with Nature's Classroom, an environmental studies organization, serving school children across New England for 5 day (Monday - Friday) stays at camp. The partnership has provided for year-round programming at the camp, and offers services for youth in outdoor education.
Nature's Classroom is a unique educational experience for students and their teachers, offering the very best in environmental education. Through the program, students take an active role in education by participating in exciting hands-on interdisciplinary classes.
The process begins when teachers volunteer to bring their students to Nature's Classroom. We then work closely with school teachers to create a learning partnership that lasts a lifetime. Once the class has spent a week with us, living and learning together, student's develop a sense of community, a confidence in themselves and an appreciation for others that carries over to the school community. They see their classroom teacher as a person and friend in the learning process.
The strengthened peer cooperation and expanded student-teacher relationships have an influence on the cognitive growth of the students throughout the school year. Together, they return to the classroom united through this shared experience to achieve the common goal of the pursuit of knowledge.
Andover is a wonderful place to experience a week at Nature's Classroom. Hidden treasures are everywhere. The Skungamaug River, flowing right through the property, is full of fish, amphibians, and other creatures waiting to be discovered. With 300 acres of woodlands there are more discoveries around every bend. Thirty foot tall "Whale Rock" is a popular destination for field groups, and usually leads to a discussion of glacial activity and climate change more than 15 thousand years ago. Some classes will ponder more recent changes as they hike to a cemetery with stones dating back to the 1700's.

Throughout the year we bring Teen Leaders out to Channel 3 Kids Camp to partake in a structured weekend of fun, leadership development and self actualization. The Channel 3 Kids Camp wants to provide teens with personal, social and recreational programs in a safe and positive environment that will enhance personal and social skills, teach leadership and responsibility, and promote individual self-esteem. Our weekend programs give teens an avenue to grow and learn and still have fun.
One of the goals of our weekend time with the teens is to empower them to make a difference in the community in which they live. Through volunteer activities at local soup kitchens, animal shelters and nursing homes, these kids will learn the value of becoming an integral part of their community and the satisfaction that comes with helping others.
Another goal of our weekend programming for our teens is to help them prepare for their future endeavors, including career development, academic achievement, leadership development and social development. The program strives to help youth improve academic skills and ultimately, prepare for college and future careers through promoting college awareness among parents and children, guest speakers, test preparation programs, computer education and self-guided technology based tutoring.
We believe that our youth are our future and to be fully prepared to become effective, informed and responsible adults, each child must understand the democratic process. Through this program, participants have opportunities to develop research, public speaking and writing skills, make friends and learn how they can make a difference in their community and state.
Our staff is there to listen to our teens and help them navigate the challenges, changes and choices associated with adolescence. It is our goal that are children are well prepared for their future and have the support necessary to reach their potential.
With over 4000 children, ages 6 - 16 participating in programs year round, and a wide variety of activities offered, we are proud to say that the opportunities provided here are unmatched anywhere in the State.
During the fall and winter months, many more children are able to experience this vast 350 acres along the Skungamaug River as they participate in Natures Classroom, where science and nature are brought to life in a way that no text book possibly can. For those who are unable to attend Natures Classroom, Camp Ventures visits local schools where science and nature are brought to life in an after school program format. Our Winter Vacation Camp offers alternative care for children during the usual cabin fever months. Our growing programs and activities make our facility much more than just a place for summer fun, but a retreat to be enjoyed all year long!
